What Is Vacuum Casting?

Vacuum casting, also known as silicone casting or hand casting, is an economical alternative to small batch injection molding of plastic parts. Usually, the mold uses CNC or SLA parts as prototypes, made of silicone material, and the parts are made of polyurethane PU material through the process of vacuum casting. Overmolded parts can accurately replicate the structure, detail and texture of the original part and provide a surface finish consistent with the original part for results similar to injection molding production.

Advantages Of Vacuum Casting

  • cheap silicone molds

The silicone overmolding process eliminates the need to invest in expensive and time-consuming injection molds.
  • Fast delivery

Up to 50 prototypes with certain functions can be produced in 10 to 15 days.
  • Extensive material selection

Polyurethane materials used for vacuum injection can be rigid, elastic, transparent, and of various colors.
  • High precision and fine details

Vacuum casting can provide high-precision and high-definition parts with production-quality levels.
  • Excellent surface finish

Compared with CNC prototype or 3D printing, vacuum casting can provide better surface quality.

How The Silicone Mold Works

The manufacturing process of silicone overmolding is divided into three steps: making the prototype, making the mold and pouring the part.

Step 1: Make Prototype Pieces

The quality of the duplex depends on the quality of the prototype, and when you need to maintain high precision, high finish, or even optical clarity, the prototype is best machined by CNC. In addition, for parts with more complex shape and structure, we will also consider using SLA to make prototypes.
We can spray a textured or matte effect on the surface of the prototype to simulate the final mold texture of the product. The silicone mold will accurately replicate the details and textures of the prototype, and the surface of the final replica part will be highly consistent with the original part.

Step 2: Making the Silicone Mold

The casting mold is made of liquid silicone, also known as RTV mold. Silicone rubber's excellent chemical stability, self-release properties and flexibility minimize shrinkage and efficiently replicate part details from prototype to mold. The production steps of the silicone mold are as follows:

  • Stick tape on a flat area around the prototype for easy mold opening later, which will also be the parting surface of the final mold.
  • Hang the prototype in a box and place glue sticks on the part to set up sprues and vents.
  • The box is filled with silica gel and evacuated, then cured in an oven at 40°C for 8-16 hours, depending on the volume of the mold.
  • After the silicone rubber is cured, the box and glue stick are removed, and the prototype is taken out from the silicone to form a cavity, and the silicone mold is made.

Step 3: Vacuum Injection Molding

Wake's standardized operating procedures ensure accurate part replication and consistent mechanical performance. Our technicians control all operating parameters: mixing, venting, agitation, preheating, pouring and demolding, delivering near-perfect replicas of prototypes. The process of vacuum injection molding is as follows:

  • First place the silicone mold in the oven and preheat to 60-70°C.
Choosing the right release agent and using it correctly before closing the mold is very important to avoid mold sticking and surface defects.
To prepare the urethane resin, preheat it to about 40°C before use, mix the two-part resin in the correct proportions, then thoroughly agitate and degas under vacuum for 50-60 seconds.
The resin is poured into a mold in a vacuum chamber, which is then re-cured in an oven. Average curing time: 1-3 hours for small pieces, 3-6 hours for large pieces.
After curing, the casting is removed from the silicone mold. Repeat this cycle.

We will work with you to ensure the success of the complete program. Whether you need a hand mold
can provide reliable and consistent results on time for both type, customized equipment and mass production components.
